         Bruce Ross Smith was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1984 and began working in sales for Xerox Corporation at its National Accounts District in Chicago. Xerox provided excellent sales and negotiations training, and while Bruce enjoyed success in sales, he wanted a more personally rewarding challenge. In 1990 he enrolled at the University of Virginia School of Law where he was chosen as a member of the Virginia Law Review and was recognized for his oral advocacy skills.

         Bruce and his wife Laura married in 1993 and moved to Lexington, Kentucky where Bruce practiced law and pursued his interest in horses. He practiced for nine years in the firm of Wyatt, Tarrant and Combs, where he became a partner and was a member of the firm's Commercial Litigation Department and its Equine Law Section. He had extensive client contact and gained valuable experience in the courtroom and in the horse industry. In Lexington, both he and Laura were very active in civic groups and charities, including Central Kentucky Riding for the Handicapped, The High Hope Steeplechase and the First United Methodist Church.
         In 2002, Bruce returned to Virginia, and practiced law with T. William Dowdy, where he handled matters pertaining to real estate, wills and trusts and litigation. In 2008, Bruce opened his own practice. He, Laura and their two children live in Fairfax Station. Bruce is an active member of Burke United Methodist Church, helps coach youth soccer and baseball, and enjoys riding horses and playing golf.
